Janelle Monáe Performs “Turntables” on The Late Show

On Tuesday, March 9th, Janelle Monáe performed her song “Turntables” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Turntables” was written by Monáe for the documentary called All In: The Fight for Democracy which is about and starring Stacey Abrams regarding voter suppression and barriers to voting in the US.

Monáe’s performance of the song on The Late Show was ramped up, powerful, and is sung as more of an anthem. The lyrics of the song talk about the fight against racism, oppression, and inequalities. Monáe sings “Hands dirty, mind clean/A different vision with a new dream/We kicking out the old regime/Liberation, elevation, education.”

“Turntables” is the first new music from Monáe since her 2018 album Dirty Computer. The artist posted about the song and All In on her Instagram saying “All In: The Fight For Democracy started out as a documentary that turned into a movement and I was blessed to be a part of it with “Turntables”.

This song is for our people and part of a revolution that is still unfolding before our eyes. This song is not for me, but for We, WE THE PEOPLE.” Along with the post was a clip from the video of “Turntables” which was released last September.
