John Rose and Leron Rogers Join Fox Rothschild, Get Used To Those Names

This week it was announced that two of Dash Radio’s close friends Leron E. Rogers (partner) & John T. Rose (associate) are joining Fox Rothschild LLP in the Entertainment & Sports Law Department in Atlanta.

Why this matters? Well, Rogers & Rose just led the charge in a big lawsuit pertaining Rick Ross’ “In Da Club Remix”. In the suit, 50 Cent was suing Rick Ross for using his “In Da Club” song on a mixtape.

By winning this case they set the precedent that artists can’t go after each other in regards to mixtapes, even if the artists have beef. This gives artists the freedom to express their creativity in the mixtape world, the freedom that makes mixtapes appealing to begin with.

John T. Rose joined our benefit streams earlier this year and has organized plenty of his own benefits including “What A Year To Be Alive” which was hosted by Dash Radio. But what he does for the culture goes beyond what these words can describe.

Imagine if Lil Wayne couldn’t use all the other artists beats he uses on No Ceilings or Da Drought Is Over. The mixtape has been an integral part of hip hop for a long time now & thanks to Rose & Rogers we won’t be losing that anytime soon.

Leron E. Rogers & John T. Rose will lead the way in entertainment law for years to come and them joining Fox Rothschild LLP gives them even more resources to keep defending the culture.

Atlanta has long been a cultural hub for music, especially Hip Hop & R&B so its extra special that the duo Rogers & Rose are representing the law firm in Atlanta, this was emphasized by Marc H. Simon, chair of the firm’s Entertainment & Sports Law Department.

Georgia has become a center for the arts and entertainment industries and has long been a hub for the hip-hop and rap scene. Expanding our reach with boots on the ground in Atlanta will benefit our client roster nationwide and provide increased opportunities for collaboration and growth,” he continued.

Georgia has become a center for the arts and entertainment industries and has long been a hub for the hip-hop and rap scene. Expanding our reach with boots on the ground in Atlanta will benefit our client roster nationwide and provide increased opportunities for collaboration and growth,” he continued.

We are thrilled to strengthen our service offerings in the region,” said Julie Earp, Managing Partner of the firms Atlanta office. Leron and John are well-known and respected attorneys in the legal community and will be integral as we continue to grow our presence in this key market.”

Last month we hosted the John T. Rose “What A Year To Be Alive” benefit stream which can be rewatched on our Twitch channel.

Congrats to both Leron E. Rogers & John T. Rose on the new endeavors! Except to see those names more and more in the coming years.

Metallica First Band To Have #1 Rock Song In Four Different Decades

Metallica broke another record this week being the first band to have a #1 mainstream rock song in four different decades.

Metallica has had a #1 song on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Song airplay chart thanks to their recent release of the S&M2 concert album. “All Within My Hands” from the project went #1 on the Billboard Rock song chart.

With this release, the historic rock band has gone #1 in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and now the 2020s. It’s the 10th time Metallica has accomplished this feat of going #1. The band first charted in 1981 and finally topped the charts in the ’90s and they haven’t slowed down since.

The first time they went #1 was with “Until I Sleep” in 1996. Though it’s early in the 2020’s we have a feeling the band isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

In other Metallica news, a newly discovered species of venomous snake was named after James Hetfield, band frontman. The name was inspired because the snake inhabits the base of a volcano, which is pretty metal, inspiring scientists to name the snake after the band frontman.

Cheers to another successful decade Metallica!

BTS’ Single ‘Dynamite’ Tops Billboard Hot 100

BTS makes history as the first all-South Korean act to top the Billboard Hot 100 with the single “Dynamite”.

The seven-member group previously reached #4 on the charts with their single “On”. This time around they came out swinging and debuted at #1. “Dynamite” is sung entirely in English and is reminiscent of a hit Bruno Mars song.

We reviewed the music video on our weekly New Music Videos w/ Dash show on Twitch & we had a blast watching the colorful video.

The song was premiered alongside the video and BTW cleverly also created a “B-Side” video which collectively the two videos have amassed over 300 million views on YouTube in a weeks time.

Dash Radio has been a supporter of K-Pop for years as we partnered with YG to launch YG Presents, a station dedicated to K-Pop hits. Thanks to BTS success we are now seeing K-Pop essentially transform into general Pop.

The success of “Dynamite” will have a long-lasting impact on US charts as we will surely see more and more international hits dominate our charts. Regardless of the group’s origin, BTS is giving us exactly what the world needs right now, great music.

Congrats to the group, we will definitely be playing “Dynamite” on all of our Pop & Hits stations!

Nas Makes ‘ULTRA BLACK’ A Real Color

In celebration of his latest single “Ultra Black” Nas partnered with Pantone Color to create an actual color “Ultra Black By Nas.” The partnership will come with new merch, including tees, coasters, a customer deck of cards & more with a portion of proceeds going to charity.

“Ultra Black” is the first single off Nas’ new album King’s Disease. The album is entirely produced by Hit-Boy and delivers one of the best bodies of work from Nas in years.

The project came as a surprise when Nas & Hit-Boy released “Ultra Black” they also announced the album and it released within a few weeks of the announcement.

“Utlra Black” was released on August 14 and immediately had Twitter talking because of the Doja Cat diss it included.

“Cash Money with the white tee and the soldier rag/We goin’ ultra black, unapologetically black/The opposite of Doja Cat, Michael Blackson black,” Nas raps on the song.

Doja Cat responded by changing the title of her latest single from “Ain’t Sh*t” to “N.A.S.”.

Besides the drama, the album is filled with great songs like “27 Summers”, “All Bad” Ft. Anderson .Paak and even a reunion of The Firm. Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown & Cormega, the original members of The Firm, re-united on the Hit-Boy produced “Full Circle”. The song ends with some words from none other than Dr. Dre himself, the original producer of The Firm.

If you haven’t heard King’s Disease yet be sure to check the album out as Nas proved once again, he’s still Nasty!

50 Cent Loses Rick Ross “In Da Club” Remix Appeal

Last week Rick Ross marked a key milestone in the longstanding suit that Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has brought against Ross for his remix of “In Da Club.”  The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York has ruled against 50 Cent’s appeal for the suit that started in 2015.

This is a key precedent marking case for all music creators, regardless of genre, because a victory for 50 Cent would’ve meant that free mixtapes and remixes would no longer be allowed for artists, unless they had the original composers permission regardless of ownership.  50 Cent’s final course of action would be having to take this to the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, DC.

Rick Ross is represented by the firm Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP, with Ross being represented by Firm partners Leron E. Rogers, Esq. & Jonathan D. Goins, Esq. and associate John T. Rose, Esq..  Both Leron E. Rogers, Esq. and John T. Rose, Esq. have recently made Billboard’s list of Top Music Lawyers for 2020.

Regarding this case, Leron, Jonathan and John state, “Today is a victory for talented artists, as well as those seeking to license the use of music.  The Second Circuit’s opinion reaffirms the creativity of artists to freely express their performances in sampling or remixing of popular songs, while at the same time, still guaranteeing that those who seek to license such songs (from a publisher or copyright holder) may do so without necessarily having to separately obtain or contractually negotiate one’s right of publicity.  Furthermore, Mr. Roberts’ remix of “In Da Club” was never about Mr. Jackson – but was simply one of many remixes on his mixtape album, which also featured songs by Adele, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Wayne.  Artists often perform lyrics in sampling or remixing songs of other artists, as it has long been a staple of hip-hop music.”  The Court correctly recognized this cultural phenomenon noting that:

“In the hip-hop world, the mere use, without more, of a sample from a well-known song, without acknowledgement of the identity of the sampled well-known song, without acknowledgement of the identity of the sampled artists, does not communicate to the relevant audience that the sampled artists has endorsed or sponsored the sampling artist’s work.”

Rick Ross’ attorneys further state, “The “In Da Club” song has been remixed or sampled countless times, even by Beyonce and P-Diddy, without any lawsuit initiated by Mr. Jackson.  So it is interesting – if not for personal animosity – that Mr. Jackson singled out Mr. Roberts for doing the same.  Mr. Jackson’s attempt to usurp the music clearance process was rejected by the lower court, and again now on appeal.  His complaint that Mr. Roberts used “his” “In Da Club” song without permission was misguided:  it isn’t his song.  The song is owned as a copyright by Shady/Aftermath – not Mr. Jackson.  Mr. Roberts’ use of “In Da Club” was a reproduction of a copyrighted work, not otherwise owned by Mr. Jackson.  Lastly, Mr. Roberts’s use of “In Da Club,” as the Court properly ruled, “was neither misleading nor did it imply that Jackson had endorsed Roberts, his mixtape, or his commercial album.”

Mr. Rogers serves as vice-chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Entertainment, Media & Sports Practice and is a member of its Business Practices and Complex Business & Commercial Litigation Practice. He represents institutional and individual clients in a wide variety of commercial litigation proceedings, business and commercial transactions, entertainment, technology, and media.

Mr. Goins is a Partner and Co-Chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Group.  He handles intellectual property matters involving trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, right of publicity and related business torts for a wide range of corporations and high-profile clientele.  He has been consistently ranked in peer-recognitions and publications for his expertise in intellectual property.

Mr. Rose is a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Corporate, Entertainment, Media & Sports and Complex Business & Commercial Litigation Practices. He represents a variety of high-profile clients, including award-winning creatives, multi-platinum recording artists and producers, and celebrity entertainers.

Congrats to our good friend John T. Rose on the big win!

If you missed it go to our Twitch and rewatch What A Year To Be Alive, a charity stream organized and hosted by John T. Rose. Esq.

Juvenile Suggests Lil Wayne Should Verzuz Battle Jay-Z

Juvenile recently sat down for an interview with Melissa Rios, Teddy Mora, and DJ Carisma for an episode of Daily Dose on Power 106 and suggested Lil Wayne should do a Verzuz battle against Jay-Z.

As they discussed Juvenile’s contributions to rap (specifically 1999’s smash hit “Back That Azz Up”), the Verzuz topic popped up. Juve proclaimed the only person who he thinks could really give Lil Wayne a run for his money in a Verzuz battle is JAY-Z.

“JAY-Z and Wayne,” he said around the 9:21-minute mark. “C’mon, let’s stop playin’. JAY-Z, Wayne. I’m puttin’ Drake in the conversation, but let it be one of them three. Let it be the top dogs. I’ve been telling Wayne he was the best rapper since day one. He used to always put JAY-Z on a pedestal and I used to tell him ‘Aye, man. You not hearing what I’m hearing.’”

The Verzuz series seemed to pick up steam in April not long after the COVID-19 pandemic started taking over the world. For one particular event, DJ Premier and RZA went head-to-head and drew in over 90,000 viewers in roughly two minutes.

Other battles have included Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, Snoop Dogg and DMX, Teddy Riley and Babyface, and more recently, 2 Chainz and Rick Ross. Due to the platform’s success, Apple Music struck up a deal with Verzuz co-founders Swizz Beatz and Timbaland last month.

Past battles are now simulcast live on Apple Music and Beats 1 simultaneously as the Verzuz Instagram Live channel. They’re also exclusively available via Apple Music following the live stream. Apple Music is working alongside Swizz and Timbo to produce new episodes of Verzuz to “continue giving fans a truly premium, high quality shared experience.”

If Juvenile has his way, Weezy and Hov will step into the arena next. Hip Hop fans can only hope.

Tate Kobang & K Camp Link Up On Single “I Remember”

After hitting fans over the head with his well-received recent body of work Wrote On My Body (4/28), proven hitmaker and established producer Tate Kobang closes out the month with the release of his catchy new anthem “I Remember” featuring platinum-selling artist K Camp.

The song, out now on all platforms, was produced by Tate as well as his close friend and frequent collaborator YG! Beats (Shordie Shordie – “Bitchuary”). This past week, Tate and Camp linked up to shoot the official video as well, which will be dropping sometime in August.

Tate‘s production crew 28 and K Camp’s Rare Sound team have worked together plenty in the past. This new track will now be the 2nd official collaboration between Tate and K Camp with the first being “X B*tch“, released at the end of 2018. The aforementioned YG! Beats, also apart of 28, recently produced the track “Birthday” (feat. Yella Beezy) off of Camp and Rare Sound’s Rare Family album.

Take Kobang will be joining us next week on New Music Videos w/ Dash, our new weekly show which will be airing on our Twitch channel. Our aim with this show is to bring back the golden era of music videos. We will be playing “I Remember” on the show and breaking the video down with Tate Kobang himself!

Tackling both his artistry and his role as a producer/songwriter, Tate has continued to thrive in every arena as a song creator. From his days of being signed to 300 Ent. with his hit single “Bank Rolls”, to more recently being an independent artist with a publishing deal from Sony ATV, Tate is carving out his niche and taking the industry by storm one day at a time. With this latest release, Tate once again shows his strong versatility and fine-tuned skillset.

From the head-nodding beat to Tate‘s infectious hook, and the braggadocios, yet introspective verses from both Tate and Camp, this new banger has every ingredient you need. While we wait for the official video to drop, be sure to check out Dash Hip Hop X where you will hear Tate Kobang and all the other great artists we got on our radar!

99 Neighbors Release Animated “QWOP” Music Video

99 Neighbors, the hip hop collective, dropped their latest visual for “QWOP” and it’s an animated masterpiece.

The group dropped “QWOP/Basement” in July 2020, a year after they got signed. The visuals for “QWOP” are reminiscent of a Rick & Morty episode.

The plot follows the group on the run from the police and others. They end up escaping on a plane and the entire video is very visually stimulating.

99 Neighbors broke into the industry in January 2019 with the release of their album Television. Since then the collective has released a slew of singles, gotten signed, and built up a huge buzz around them.

Consisting of 9 members they give different energy on every record they release. “QWOP” & “Basement” are both standout records. If you haven’t heard them already go check out 99 Neighbors now and jump on the wave before its too big!

The group reminds us of Wu-Tang Clain & Odd Future. Wu-Tang because their styles vary so much and they really mesh well together on their songs. Odd Future in the sense of their youth and rebellious spirits.

We had the pleasure of sitting down via Instagram Live with a couple of the members of 99 Neighbors and they shared with us how they came together. They also talked about their rise from releasing Television in January 2019 to signing in July 2019 up to their release of “QWOP” & “Basement” in July 2020.

You can rewatch the interview on our YouTube channel.
