99 Neighbors Release Animated “QWOP” Music Video

99 Neighbors, the hip hop collective, dropped their latest visual for “QWOP” and it’s an animated masterpiece.

The group dropped “QWOP/Basement” in July 2020, a year after they got signed. The visuals for “QWOP” are reminiscent of a Rick & Morty episode.

The plot follows the group on the run from the police and others. They end up escaping on a plane and the entire video is very visually stimulating.

99 Neighbors broke into the industry in January 2019 with the release of their album Television. Since then the collective has released a slew of singles, gotten signed, and built up a huge buzz around them.

Consisting of 9 members they give different energy on every record they release. “QWOP” & “Basement” are both standout records. If you haven’t heard them already go check out 99 Neighbors now and jump on the wave before its too big!

The group reminds us of Wu-Tang Clain & Odd Future. Wu-Tang because their styles vary so much and they really mesh well together on their songs. Odd Future in the sense of their youth and rebellious spirits.

We had the pleasure of sitting down via Instagram Live with a couple of the members of 99 Neighbors and they shared with us how they came together. They also talked about their rise from releasing Television in January 2019 to signing in July 2019 up to their release of “QWOP” & “Basement” in July 2020.

Roddy Ricch Spices Up Tiny Desk Concert

Roddy Ricch added his own flavor to NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts featuring Ty Dolla $ign, 1500 or Nothin, & West Coast Customs.

The Atlantic Records artist recorded his Tiny Desk set at the famed auto garage, alongside Ty Dolla $ign for a special performance backed by Los Angeles hitmakers 1500 Or Nothin.

The multi-platinum selling rapper staged his concert at West Coast Customs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced NPR’s series to shift to remote editions.

While other artists have performed from their couches and home studios, Roddy opted to pull off something more unique.

This will surely start a trend as NPR isn’t slowing down on their Tiny Desk series and now every artist after Roddy is going to have to step it up.

Throughout the pandemic we have seen players in the music industry think outside “the box”, no pun intended, ah ha ha ha. From Swizz Beats & Timbaland battling it out over who has more hits and the creation of VerzuzTV, to Guapdad4000 hosting RonaRaps with rappers like Chance The Rapper, Isaiah Rashaad, & Chris Brown, we’ve seen innovation in our industry like never before.

Roddy Ricch is just another example of an artist thinking outside of the box during this pandemic. One of the bright sides of this pandemic is that we’re being forced to connect to our fans in different ways & it will be interesting to see what new ideas from the pandemic stand the test of time and shift the culture even after the world goes back to normal.

Babyy Chris 2K drops “No Harm” with Kevin Gates

Last week, Babyy Chris 2K dropped the perfect summer vibe No Harm, featuring Kevin Gates.

With production from Mike Mixer (Gunna, T.I., Jacquees) and Cicero (Kodak Black, Lil Baby, Polo G), this single that has been making its rounds through Atlanta’s club circuit since the city’s reopening.

Making his major-label debut on Reckless Republic/Island Records, the MC has been working toward this for a while. “No Harm” is about the work he’s had to put in and a day in the life of a Rockstar.  This debut doesn’t come solo, he receives the ultimate co-sign from Kevin Gates. Working with the platinum award-winning rapper and southern legend— allowed Babyy Chris 2k to cross this off his bucket list. This is only the beginning for the promising ATLien.

He brings a new sound with a memorable look, leaving you wanting more.   A self-proclaimed fashion pioneer in Atlanta, Babyy Chris 2K birthed a lot of the “drip” seen around the city.  Prior to mainstream acceptance of skinny jeans, you couldn’t really find them for men, he said; so, he resorted to shopping in the women’s section of True Religion for his jeans. Chris explains it’s deeper than labels, it’s a true taste for fashion.

It takes undeniable versatility to break through and win over fans in this current music climate. Born and raised in the Bankhead neighborhood of Atlanta, Christopher “Babyy Chris 2K” Miller knew that he wanted to be a star since the age of 10. Growing up on the sounds of Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne, Jimi Hendrix, and Mick Jagger, just to name a few, have molded the sound that you are hearing through his music.

Be on the lookout for Babyy Chris 2K this year as he’s poised to take over the charts & become a household name all around the world.

The Grammys Announce Major Changes To Rap & R&B Categories

The Grammy Awards is a presentation ceremony held by the Recording Academy that recognizes musical achievements. The first Grammy Awards was held in 1959, and twenty-eight awards were presented. In the past sixty-one years of the award ceremony, many changes have been made in terms of the actual ceremony, the number of awards presented, and the categories.

In light of the murder of George Floyd, the nationwide protests, and the recent increased prominence of the Black Lives Matters movement in the media, many people have been calling for companies to take actions in support of the movement. The Grammys have unfortunately previously come under fire before for snubbing black artists and not adapting to the current times.

Most notably, in 2017 Drake’s song “Hotline Bling” was nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance even though it is not a rap song. In response to this and “One Dance” not being nominated for Record of the Year, Drake did not attend the awards ceremony. Additionally, in the same year, Adele’s 25 won Album of the Year over Beyoncé’s Lemonade. In her acceptance speech, Adele even mentioned how monumental Lemonade was, and said that Beyoncé’s album should have won over hers.

Well, in response to all of this, the Recording Academy released a press release on Wednesday, June 10 announcing changes that will “go into effect immediately” for the future Grammy Awards. These changes include the renaming of the Best Urban Contemporary Album award to Best Progressive R&B Album, the renaming of the Best Rap/Sung Performance category into Best Melodic Rap Performance, and more.

The emphasis of the changes was mainly on the usage of the word “urban,” which Tyler, The Creator has previously commented as being “just [a] politically correct way to say the N-word” and place all “the guys that look like me” into the same category while almost ignoring and simplifying his “genre-bending” work. Last week, Republic Records announced that it would stop using the term “urban” to “not adhere to the outdated structures of the past” and urged the rest of the music industry to follow suit.

To learn more and support the movement, listen to Dash Radio’s Fight The Power Radio here, we will continue to organize benefit streams to raise awareness and funds.
